The Ionian Dream: A Journey Through Southern Albania

A day exploring Berat, the stunning UNESCO World Heritage site known as the "City of a Thousand Windows," is a journey through time and architecture. Start your morning with a climb up to the Berat Castle (Kalaja), a living fortress where locals still reside. Inside the walls, immerse yourself in history by visiting the Onufri Iconographic Museum with its vibrant 16th-century icons, and exploring the ancient churches and mosque ruins. From the castle's ramparts, take in the breathtaking, classic panorama of the city below.

Overnight in Berat

Afterward, descend into the two historic districts lining the Osum River. First, wander the narrow, cobbled alleys of the Mangalem Quarter to see the iconic white Ottoman houses that give the city its nickname, making sure to visit the beautifully decorated Halveti Teqe and the King Mosque. For the perfect postcard photo, cross the historic stone Gorica Bridge to the quieter Gorica Quarter, which offers the definitive view of Mangalem's "thousand windows." Conclude your immersive day by savoring delicious traditional Berati cuisine, featuring regional specialties like Fergesë or baked lamb with yogurt (Tavë Kosi)

Today your journey continues towards the great city of Gjiroakster.

A day in Gjirokastër, the majestic "Stone City," is a dramatic descent into the Ottoman past and a stark confrontation with Albania's 20th-century history. Your tour should begin with a climb to the colossal Gjirokastër Castle, the largest fortress in the Balkans outside of Krujë, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Drinos Valley. Inside the castle, explore the eerie former prison and the National Museum of Armaments, where you'll find everything from cannons to an incongruous American jet, a fascinating relic of the Cold War.

Next, traverse the steep, winding cobblestone streets (known as kalldrëm) down to the revitalized Old Bazaar, the vibrant heart of the city, where you can browse artisan shops for traditional crafts and grab a coffee at the picturesque Bazaar Mosque. In the afternoon, dive into the city's architectural heritage by visiting one of the best-preserved Tower Houses (Kullas), such as the multi-story Zekate House or Skenduli House, to gain insight into the luxurious life of 19th-century elite families. For a final, chilling glimpse into the communist era, explore the subterranean Cold War Tunnel, a massive secret bunker built for government officials. Conclude your day by enjoying a local dinner featuring Gjirokastër's unique dishes like Qifqi (rice balls) at a traditional taverna as the stone roofs turn gold in the sunset. 

Overnight in Gjirokaster

This day  you will set off for the town of Përmet. On the way, you will have the opportunity to drive through the stunning landscapes typical of southern Albania, with its green hills and valleys sculpted by time.

You will drive along part of the Vjosa River valley, considered one of the last wild rivers in Europe and recently classified as a national park. Its turquoise waters and winding course offer a unique panorama that accompanies much of your journey.

You will arrive in Përmet, a small town renowned for its hospitality and unspoilt natural environment. You can explore the town centre, admire its old houses with colourful facades and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Përmet is also known for its craft and gastronomic specialities, including local jam and the famous gliko.

Located near Permet, you can also visit the Benja hot springs, located a few kilometres away, famous for their warm waters and old Ottoman bridge, which offers an exceptionally photogenic setting. For the more adventurous, one the best activities is also hiking the majestic Langarica Canyon. In the afternoon, you will return to Gjirokastër. Enjoy a free evening to soak up the unique atmosphere of the old town.

Overnight in Gjirokaster

Departure in the morning for the ancient site of Butrint. This UNESCO World Heritage Site represents a microcosm of Mediterranean history. Epirotes, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans have all left their mark on this magnificent site. The French playwright Racine set his play Andromaque in Butrint.

You will then head to the small seaside town of Himara. This town is located in the magnificent Albanian Riviera region. Olive trees, small traditional villages and the blue Ionian Sea characterise this region.

Overnight in Himare

Your day begins with an optional but highly recommended 3-4 hour morning boat tour from Himara, where you'll cruise the stunning Ionian coast, stopping to swim and snorkel at secluded bays like Kakome or the Turtle Cave, returning to shore around 1:00 PM. in the afternoon, your journey continues with the incredibly scenic drive to Vlora along the Albanian Riviera coastal road. The highlight of this transfer is stopping at the Llogara Pass summit to capture breathtaking views where the mountains meet the sea. You will arrive in Vlora in the late afternoon, allowing time to check into your accommodation and immediately take a relaxing evening stroll along the main Lungomare (seafront promenade), enjoying the sunset over the Adriatic before dinner.

Overnight in Vlore

This intense day of history and travel begins with an early start from Vlora, driving north to the ancient port city of Durrës. Your primary stop here should be the magnificent Roman Amphitheater, the largest in the Balkans, complemented by a quick walk past the remaining city walls and the Venetian Tower near the port. From Durrës, you'll drive inland for about an hour to the medieval mountain town of Krujë, the historical heart of Albanian resistance; here, dedicate time to exploring the imposing Krujë Castle which houses the Skanderbeg Museum, before descending through the enchanting, wooden Old Bazaar for last-minute souvenir shopping. Finally, take the short 45-minute drive into the capital, Tirana, to check into your accommodation and celebrate the end of your coastal journey with a well-deserved dinner and evening stroll through the vibrant Blloku district.
